An American diplomat has died in the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv, the US State Department confirmed on Wednesday.

The confirmation came after Strana, a Ukrainian outlet, reported that the unnamed government official was found dead in a room of the Hilton Hotel in the city on Tuesday morning.

It further reported that although no autopsy was performed, there were no signs of violence and that the body was returned to the US embassy in Kyiv.

In confirming the death, State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said: "...we can confirm the death of a U.S. Government employee who was under chief of mission authority at Embassy Kyiv."

"We extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of our colleague," Miller continued.

Miller added: "I don't have any further comment about the situation, other than to say — and I hate to even bring this up, but I know sometimes conspiracy theories spin out of control — that it is our understanding that he died of natural causes, and there is no sign of foul play."
